THE NEED FOR A PARADIGM CHANGE IN ONCOLOGY RESEARCH
[Click on '1. Dimension of the Problem' to read full page]
CANCER TAKES PREMATURELY (< 75 years of age) OVER 6 MILLION LIVES EVERY YEAR: ONE EVERY 5 SECONDS!
CANCER COST TO THE 38 MOST INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES IS $741 BILLION/YEAR
According to WHO, GLOBAL CANCER RATES COULD INCREASE BY 50% TO 15 MILLION BY 2020
Figure showing how cancer deaths rate relates to other cause of deaths
[Click on '2. Meager Results in 50 Years' to read full page].
THE $93.2 BILLION DIRECT MEDICAL EXPENDITURES FOR CANCER IN THE U.S. IN 2008 WERE ABOUT 100 TIMES GREATER THAN THOSE OF 50 YEARS EARLIER, WHILE THE COST OF LIVING INCREASED ONLY 3 TIMES.
DURING THE PAST 50 YEARS REDUCTION IN CANCER DEATHS HAS BEEN RECORDED AS A MERE 5%, WHILE FOR HEART DISEASE THE REDUCTION WAS 64%.
Results published by FORTUNE Magazine, 'The New York Times' and WIRED Magazine.
THE DIRECTION IN CANCER RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE CHANGED
IT IS EVIDENT WHEN ONE BECOMES AWARE FROM EXPERIMENTAL DATA THAT THE REDUCTION OF CANCER DEATH RATE IN THE 38 MOST INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES IS APPROXIMATELY THE SAME AS IN LESS DEVELOPED COUNTRIES THAT DO NOT HAVE A COST OF ABOUT $741 BILLION/YEAR.
Figure showing data gathered by WHO, adapted by American Cancer Society and published by NIH-NCI.

First Priority: Saving Lives
This should be first priority whereas currently it is the second priority (the reduction in cancer death has been recorded as a mere 5% over the past 50 years versus 100 fold increase in direct medical expenditures for cancer)
Second Priority: Profit
This should be second priority whereas currently it is the first priority (total cancer costs in the 38 most industrialized countries is $741 billion/year, which equals $750/per-capita annually). Furthermore, the Return on Investiment (ROI) should go mainly to the Investor, while currently, Investor "A" (e.g. the taxpayers) put up the money (Government grants), and the Return or "profit" goes to pharmaceutical companies "B" or to a few businessmen "C".

Expected contribution of the P.I. to the reduction in cancer deaths as a percentage of what he received for cancer research during all years compared to funds available during the same years. The expected percentage of lives saved is equal to either that declared by the P.I. or, the sum of all project funded to the P.I., times 100%, divided by the total funds of all projects in the years when the P.I received funds.

The percentage of lives saved is equal to either that declared by the P.I. or, the project fund times (100% - the total declared estimate of lives saved in current and previous years) divided by the total funds of all projects in current year. If the total declared estimate of lives saved is greater than 100%, then the percentage needs to be provided by the P.I. and for the time being is indicated as zero.
